Several years ago, I went to Africa. Twenty three glorious days in the Republic of South Africa, it was a trip of a lifetime and changed me forever. I was in love with that place and so very alive there. Along the way, a friend had given me the book “No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency” by Alexander McCall Smith. The setting for the book is Botswana which is just North of South Africa where the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta create an environment of contrasts. One of the characters owns a shop named the Double Comfort Furniture Store. In this shop name we find one of the things that reveals the English language is alive. Not fine furniture, nor luxury, not extra comfort or super comfortable, but the word “double” used, as no native Londoner would, to mean big, two times big.
This double big meaning I take and use to explain the benefit of using our t-shirts twice. We wear our t-shirts because they are comfortable and we keep them because of the memories of the time, places and people we were with when wearing them. In making them into a quilt, we give them new life and they once again give us comfort. I wish you all double comfort and happiness!
I want a “double comfort” quilt!! What a great name. Also, the quilt is probably doubly comfortable as well!
You are so right ! Thanks for the comment!
